Fake It ’til You Make It

Confidence is key when styling hair.  When clients sit in your chair you have to radiate confidence so they believe that you’ll do a fantastic job on their hair.

When writing, it’s hard to keep our confidence.  With all the rejections we face, how can fight to keep it?

Fake it, baby.

When I’m feeling sad, my mother always tells me to pretend that I’m happy, to pretend that I’m having a great day.  “Smile for no reason, and soon you’ll have a reason to smile,” she used to say.  It sounds dopey, but it worked.  By the end of the day I would be in a much better mood.

So if you don’t think you’re going to make it as a writer, pretend that you are.  Imagine that book on bookshelves.  If the book you’re writing is giving you the blues and you don’t think you’ll finish, imagine how great you’ll feel when you type the words that are a favorite among writers: THE END.  Imagining those two words will help any writer stick their butt in a chair and write.

Getting and staying positive in this industry is tough.  And by the looks of things it’s going to get tougher.  But faking confidence will help tide you over until you actually can muster up some confidence of your own.  Today’s post by Allison Winn Scotch gave some really good tips on how she kept believing in herself.

So what do you do to bolster your confidence?  Has faking it helped you to get the real thing?
