Taking My Time

I mentioned last week that I’m writing 1,000 words a day on my next book. I really like the pace this novel is taking. I feel less pressure and feel like I can juggle all the other things going on in my life.

I always feel rushed when I write. Not that someone is rushing me, I tend to rush myself.

“Get it out on paper, then move on to the next project,” is what the voice in my head says as I write. I want to hurry up and finish so I can get on with the next project.

This is probably due to the rushed state I felt when I was a hairstylist. I would see all these clients waiting for me and I all I could think was, “Hurry up, on to the next one…”

Writing isn’t a race. Nor is it the assembly line I created while doing hair. :)

It isn’t about how fast I get the words down on the screen, it’s about the quality of the words on the screen.

I think I owe it to myself this time around to take my time, to think about each word before I move on. This isn’t a sprint. It’s a marathon. And I don’t want to get burned out before the race is even over.

Katrina, I truly agree with you when you say its quality over quantity. There is no rush to producing a good book. I have been an avid reader all my life and when I picked up your book, “Six O’Clock”, I enjoyed every page. The fact that you didn’t rush to produce your body of work tells in the way you told your story. I appreciate that you remembered your readers and gave us the best work that you could possibly do. Never gives us less than your best and we will be for many years to come enjoying all your novels.

  • Thanks Dee! I do always feel rushed when I write but I’m learning to take my time and put out my best work. I hope you enjoy Unbeweaveable!

  • I try to zip through a first draft, but the second one usually takes forever.

  • Finally at least someone understands what I’m talking about! Thanks for stopping by the blog, Phyllis!
