Wigs, Wigs, and More Wigs

I’m still in lovely Florida and will be home soon to post pictures of my adventures. I had a lovely time with family, and didn’t worry about my book launch one bit. Well maybe two bits. I mean, who takes a vacation three weeks before their book is out? I do. And I enjoyed every second of it. I have book give-a-ways soon and other lovely things to give away. And my lovely hubby has promised that my website will be finished before Unbeweaveable is released. Isn’t that right baby?

Okay, I had a question from a reader asking me why I don’t talk about wigs. I never meant to leave my Wiggy’s out of the equation, and of course I’ve worn several in my lifetime, so today let’s talk about wigs—the good, the bad, and the ugly.

First off, wigs are—and should be—every woman’s best friend. I personally think that every woman should have a few in their hairstyling arsenal. Think about it ladies, haven’t you needed to run errands and didn’t feel like worrying about your hair? Maybe you wanted to sit a full day with deep conditioner or you had your niece play in your hair revealing a few crooked cornrows, (Is that just me? Oh, alright…), whatever the case may be—you don’t feel like doing your hair. But if you owned a wig—Ta-da! Out comes a perfectly coiffed head of hair ready to be worn. No need to make an appointment with your stylist. (Now before you pick up your phone, you can’t fire ‘em—you still need them to maintain your wig and your hair underneath.) If you owned a wig you’re ready to go at a moments notice. Wigs are also more comfortable than the wigs of yesterday—now they can be worn without sweat rolling down your neck—thanks to a feather-light base. Wigs come in various colors and styles; synthetic hair, (machine-made hair, cheap if you’re on a budget, but need to be replaced frequently), human hair, (my personal preference, can be styled just like your natural hair, shampooed, curled, blow-dried, more expensive but lasts much longer.)

The one myth about wigs is that lace fronts are a new trend. These wigs have been around for years, (hairstylists have used these wigs for decades on movie sets) and now they have hit mainstream. These wigs can look beautiful, but are expensive, (some costing well over $5,000.) Of course, most of us can’t spend that much money on wigs, so we run to our local beauty supply and spend $100 dollars on a cheap lace front wig. What’s worse, some of the young girls are now shaving their hairline to make their wigs look more natural. Ladies, I’m all for beautiful hair, but if you are shaving hair, to get hair then you don’t need any hair. It’s ridiculous and it’s just as glaring as a bald man wearing a bad toupee. Trust me ladies, it’s ugly and if you’re friends aren’t telling you, I am. Stop it!

Wigs are definitely becoming the trend for celebrities. Katy Perry donned a blue wig for this year’s MTV Movie Award’s. What I like about her look is that she is making a statement, letting everyone know that she is wearing a wig. I mean come on people how many of us have hair like this?

This is an obvious lace front, but she has opted to keep her hairline. (I feel like I’m on a Save the Hairline campaign!)

But my all-time favorite Wiggy, has to be Wendy Williams. I love her honesty about her wigs, I love how her wigs have almost became another character on her show.

This woman loves her wigs like it’s another child and has several to take her through the day. (She even has a wig that she wears when she works out—now that’s a true Wiggy!)

So guys I love wigs just like my weave, but the most important rule is that you must take care of your hair underneath. Because healthy hair is beautiful hair. But a bald hairline is not.
