I used to question being funny. I felt that being funny in my writing wasn’t enough. But I’ve learned that being funny is not only natural for me, it is a gift. I gift I plan on using wisely.

I say all that to say—we all know Monique is funny. That’s how she started out. But who knew she would be a trailblazer, (The first African-American woman to host her own late-night talk show. Take that Jay Leno!), and had the courage and guts to play this role so well?

I didn’t. But she showed people wrong, and continues everyday to show people that she is more than just a joke-teller. This woman has many sides.

I’m funny. It’s natural for me to make people laugh and I can do it with little effort. As a new writer, I sometimes struggle with my style and voice. Do I want to be the author known for making my readers laugh out loud at my characters? Or do I want them to learn something new, to gain insight on a different way of life?

Hopefully both. I bring the funny. That’s what I do. For some reason I talked myself into thinking that being funny in my writing was not good enough. I didn’t think I could do both.

But then I remembered that a lot of my favorite authors are just that–funny and insightful. Being funny is a talent, something that many people wish that they had. So instead of whining that I wasn’t serious enough, I worked harder balancing the funny, making sure that my characters weren’t clowns telling jokes all the time.

Being funny is a gift that I’m glad I have, and a gift that I finally learned not to be embarrassed to use.
