My book is in pretty good shape. After reading several author’s blogs on how they turned in their finished manuscript to their agents this week, it has me a little anxious to finish. I have about 75 more pages to edit, but the reason this is such hard work, is because I added another character and had to add new info from my updated research. So I’m plugging along folks. I’m hoping to finish it this month. And then on to revision 4. (Or five or six, it’s hard to count anymore…)

Have you guys guessed who is stopping by the blog this Friday? Okay, I’ll give you two more clues: 1) Her 15th novel came out on January 10th of this year. 2) She lives in Illinois. Okay, now I know you all probably know who it is by now, so I’ll fill you guys in tomorrow.

I haven’t worn a weave in exactly four months. And fifteen days. Not that I’m counting or anything. Goodness, no. But since I haven’t worn a weave, I have been rocking my real hair. (Although I did rock a wig on a formal event I attended with the hubby. What? Wigs don’t count…) Wearing a weave can be addicting, (hence the idea for my second novel Unbeweaveable. Have you bought your copy yet?) but what people don’t talk about is the addicting nature of trying to grow your hair. I’m not talking about your average I-cut-my-bangs-too-short-and-now-have-to-grow-it-out, I’m talking about black women growing their hair to down their back or waist length. And for all those who don’t think it’s possible, just scan the internet and you will find dozens of blogs that will teach you how to grow your hair long. These ladies have it down to a science, they document their hair with photos, (usually with their top off, back to the camera showing their long locks. I always wondered why does their shirt have to be off? Wouldn’t a white tank-top suffice?) they have their rigorous hair regimen listed and most will have several product reviews.

And I, my friend, have become obsessed. From downing garlic pills three times a day, to dousing my hair in coffee, (both are for shedding), and for sending the hubby out in freezing weather to pick up aloe vera juice. (Again, for shedding.) I mean the list goes on and on. I could open a beauty supply with all the products I’ve been picking up and sadly, I’m not even close to being done. (Are you reading this hubby? Oh, I forgot to tell you I need to order silk amino acid to add to my shampoo.) It’s trial and error with hair products, you have to try so many to figure out which works for your hair.

After a month of obsessing, I’ve finally found a few things that I plan to keep in my regimen. I’m not going to bore you guys about what I use and go through the details of when I relax, when I trim, how often I shampoo…you get the drift—it can get exhausting. I do plan on taking pictures of my hair, (with my shirt on of course) and will use them to help me stay the course and to prevent me from getting scissor-happy.

What I’ve learned through all of this is that I have a true love for hair. In all its forms and differing textures I think it’s beautiful. (When it’s healthy.) So I’ve calmed down and don’t bore people to tears about how I think coconut oil is the best pre-poo ever. (I know, I know, pre-poo? It basically means to deep condition or do a hot oil treatment before you shampoo your hair.) I just continue to experiment with a few new products each month, while learning which ingredients my hair loves.

For the longest time I wouldn’t wear bangs. My younger sister constantly teased me that my forehead was too small, and that bangs would overwhelm my face. Last winter, I proved her wrong and rocked bangs for the first time. I wore them full and just above my eyes like shown here. Sure, I could barely see and tripped over my own feet, but I felt it was a small price to pay for beauty.

It’s still too warm outside, but a cold front is supposed to move in Houston by tomorrow so I’m considering pulling out the bang look when I get my hair done today. What do you think? Are you a fan of bangs, or do you prefer having hair out of your face?

Have a banging weekend!

Rihanna's color change. [...]

Most people who wear dark hair want a change now and then. I can remember a time when I didn’t care about the health of my hair–if I wanted a different color I did it.

But now I’m older. And now I see how pretty my weave is the longer my hair is, (Sounds silly I know, but us Weavy Wonders know that the longer and healthier your hair is, the more natural your weave looks. But I’ll save that for another post…) and so I keep my hair dark.

Now normally I love Rihanna’s look. I absolutely love her with dark hair. The dark hair brings out her features and doesn’t wash out her skin tone like her brown hair did.

Source: rihanna.blogspot.com

(Plus with the brown hair she blended in too much with the other pop stars of the world. Beyonce, Ashanti…)

And yes I was one of the millions of women who copied her signature short hair cut.

Source: peoplestylewatch.com

This is what I’m used to when I see Rihanna. Now I know she had to change up her look. I know that. But to this?

Source: OmG.com

I’m sure her look is temporary and was helped with blonde extensions, but I’m not feeling the blonde. Rihanna, come back to the dark side!

Seeing the world through hair-tinted glasses. [...]

The first thing I notice on a person is–you guessed it–their hair. I can’t help it! Old habits die hard.

When I re-read my second manuscript, I noticed that all the descriptions of my characters were not descriptions of them–I only described their hair. No strands were left uncovered. (Believe me I fixed this in my re-writes.)

So who’s hair am I feeling now? It would have to be Monica. The only word to describe her hair is FIERCE!

Next would be Taraji P. Henson. She is rocking that cut!

I feel like I have hair-tinted glasses on all the time. Whenever I describe someone in real life I always start with their hair.

“Did you see the girl with the angled bob cut?”

“No, not her, the one with all the split ends.”

Annoying?

Yes.

Will I do something about it?

Absolutely not!
