Most of you guys know that I struggled this year with finding my voice as a writer and finally choosing the style of writing that fits me. I like to hit on serious issues in my books but I do like to tickle people’s funny bone and get a giggle out here and there. I used to feel bad about that, but not anymore. Making people laugh is a gift, and I plan to embrace it. That being said, I have a signed copy of Unbeweaveable to give away to the person who tells me the best joke. And keep it clean folks—no profanity or sexual connotations—just good, clean laughs.

I’m funny. It’s natural for me to make people laugh and I can do it with little effort. As a new writer, I sometimes struggle with my style and voice. Do I want to be the author known for making my readers laugh out loud at my characters? Or do I want them to learn something new, to gain insight on a different way of life?

Hopefully both. I bring the funny. That’s what I do. For some reason I talked myself into thinking that being funny in my writing was not good enough. I didn’t think I could do both.

But then I remembered that a lot of my favorite authors are just that–funny and insightful. Being funny is a talent, something that many people wish that they had. So instead of whining that I wasn’t serious enough, I worked harder balancing the funny, making sure that my characters weren’t clowns telling jokes all the time.

Being funny is a gift that I’m glad I have, and a gift that I finally learned not to be embarrassed to use.
